Cotton Farming

Fulbright-Nehru Research Grant, 2012

It is hard to come by accurate data regarding the number of Indian farmers who have died by suicide. Back in 2011, when I began this in depth research, it was estimated that every 30 minutes, a farmer dies by suicide. This alarming epidemic was what initially drew me to this work. During my time in Maharashtra, I set out to observe cotton farmers in order to better understand the context in which these deaths are occurring. I have a lot to say about it. Maybe I will write a book someday. For now, I am letting my photographs tell the story.
